Diabetes: Tips on leg and foot care

It is important that diabetes sufferers be aware of the possible risks that may affect their overall health, beginning with the feet and legs. To be well informed is to be well prepared. Once you know more about the possible consequence of diabetes, you can come up with the necessary action plan to prevent the consequence from becoming a reality. The following paragraphs will provide the necessary tips to diabetes sufferers on how to take extra special care of their feet and legs. At most, the diabetes sufferer can at least delay the onset of serious damages. The tips here are obtained from what I have read as well as what I myself have experienced first-hand. I hope it serves you well too.

Inspect your feet and legs at least once per day. You can do it in the evening or in the morning. Make it a daily affair until it becomes habitual. Watch out for any discoloration on your legs and feet. Press the edges of your feet to ensure that you can feel them. Next, check for cuts or wounds, no matter how small it may be. Heel cracks need to be attended to. Use a suitable heel cream to smoothen the cracks as well as for the legs. You will need to moisturize it daily. Diabetics tend to have dry skin and may become scaly. A good cream moisturizer should be able to help smoothen the skin. A diabetic should also remember never to use the cream in-between the toes. Should you discover any problem on your feet or leg, have it examine by a medical doctor as soon as possible. For myself, I used 2 different types of cream, one for the heel and the other for my legs. Note that the cream that you buy must specifically state the purpose, that is, if it is for the heel; look for a cream meant for the heel. The reason for this is that the sole of the feet and the heel are much tougher than that of the skin on the legs. This mean that the cream used for the sole and heel should have stronger properties, and it should not be applied to the skin of the legs.

Lookout for growth such as corns and calluses. Do not try to cut it off. Attempts to remove it may give rise to infections that could spread to other parts of the feet and legs. Also, do not self-medicate. It is better to consult a medical doctor. Even if there is some loose skin on the feet or legs, do not peel it off. I remembered that in my younger days, when I have a corn that grew near to my sole, I would use a corn plaster to remove it. Now, I would not do this. I would seek a doctor’s advise on the best possible way to remove it. I’m afraid that should I remove it myself, the wound might not heal. This could lead to complications and if it could not be cured, the possibility of having my leg amputated is very high.

Is there any pain in your feet or legs? Check that there is no swelling. Also, check that no sores or blisters have developed. If the pain continues without any sign of improvement, a diabetes sufferer should consult a medical doctor. I am more aware nowadays with what my feet and legs are saying to me

To ensure that your feet and legs are taken care of, always wash in warm water. Do not use hot water, as it may cause complication. Make sure that the diabetic sufferer feet are always well taken care of and clean off all dirt. Do not soak the diabetic feet in water. Just rinsing it should be sufficient. Thereafter, dry the feet thoroughly especially in-between the toes. Failure to take care of the space in-between the toes could possibly lead to bacteria breeding and that may result in infection if it is not clean properly.

Diabetes sufferer will have to remember to trim their toenails. Do not trim it too short as it might cause problem. Previously, I have the habit of cutting my toenails as short as possible. Sometimes, I may even draw blood in the process of cutting my nails. Also, it is not advisable to cut the nails into a rounded edge as it will encourage in-grown toenail. A doctor once told me that should there be in-grown toenails, they might have to do surgery on the toe to remove the nail in the affected toe.

The last tip here is that to protect the feet, a diabetes sufferer should never walk barefooted. Always wear a pair of shoes that covers the toes as well as the whole feet. Make sure that the shoes are a comfortable fit and is not too small that it crimps your feet or too large that there is no grip. You will need to wear a pair of well-padded socks. Avoid wearing sandals, especially those with an open front, as it will expose your feet. You may inevitably kick something while walking about in a pair of sandals and might injure your toes or other parts of your feet. So better to be safe than sorry by wearing shoes and socks for better protection.

Diabetes: Prevent feet and leg amputation. Be educated.

Diabetes sufferers are at risk of losing their limbs through amputation due to the nature of diabetes. The legs of diabetes sufferers over a period of time, if not taken care of, would lose all sensation. When this happen, any wound or injuries sustained on their legs would usually go unnoticed. If left untreated, the wound may fester, and in extreme cases, when the legs cannot be saved, doctors will have no choice but to amputate. Why do diabetic people let this happened? One simple reason is that they are not aware of the consequence of diabetes. It is hoped that by educating them further, they will realize the danger of diabetes and take the necessary preventive actions.

Once forewarned of this danger, those suffering from diabetes can take the correct action to prevent the loss of their legs to amputation due to diabetes. It is a fact; once a person is struck by diabetes, there is the possibility of losing the legs to diabetes. In the past, when complications occur to the legs of a diabetes sufferer, the easy way out by some doctors were to have the diabetic legs amputated. Even in today's modern world, the option chosen by some doctors is to have the legs amputated if they find that nothing much can be done for the person suffering from diabetes. I should know because I saw it happened to my own aunt. Her leg was amputated as a result of diabetes, and it was not too long before she passed away as she failed to take care of herself. I want to emphasize, through this article, the importance of looking after a diabetic person's legs. Also, being more aware of what could happen to a diabetic sufferer’s leg is to help to educate the diabetic person to avoid an amputation.

There has been a lot of things said about foot ulcer, but how does one knows what a foot ulcer is? According to Dr. Vijay Viswanathan, foot ulcers are sores on the feet that often occur in people with diabetes. (Viswanathan, Vijay (2009). Feet first. Beta, 1 (3), Retrieved July 10 2009). This is due to the poor supply of blood flow to the legs. Because of poor blood circulation, a diabetes legs would be less sensitive than a healthy person’s legs. That is why whenever there is a problem with the leg; a person with diabetes does not usually realize it. So this posed a serious health problem to them.

According to a report, diabetes sufferer would frequently developed premature and severe arteriosclerosis. To make a long story short and to avoid the medical jargons, it was stated that a consequence of this is that a diabetic person would most likely have small and thinner arteries. The damaged arteries are not as efficient as those that are healthy and would not be able to ensure the smooth flow of blood. A possible result of this is that there is a risk of gangrene developing. (Falkel, Jeffrey E. (1983 ). Amputation as a consequence of diabetes mellitus. Physical Therapy, Retrieved July 10 2009)

A number of diabetes sufferers will, in a few years time lose all sensation in their legs. Losing the feelings in the legs is a danger to diabetics. They are at risks as they would not be able to feel pain in their feet. Should they injure themselves further in the feet, they may not even realize it (Zulfiqarali, Abbas. Diabetes foot damage in developing countries: the urgent need for education. 2005 November, Diabetes Voice, 50, Retrieved July 10 2009). A person suffering from diabetes can damage his feet further if inappropriate or ill-fitting footwear is used. Even the simple act of cutting toenails may cause damage to a diabetic foot if it is not cut properly. Sometimes people are not aware that such simple acts may lead to disastrous results due to lack of education on diabetes. However, it must be noted that foot infection can be prevented.

A person having diabetes should not take it lightly if gangrene is found in the legs. Immediate medical attention is needed. Do not self-medicate. Having reach this stage, the diabetic person life is already in danger. He or she has to be admitted to a hospital. Even if it is too late to save the leg, at least the person's life can be saved.

Normal foot problems such as corn, bunions, calluses and blisters are common foot problems for most people. It is different for a diabetes sufferer. They have to be more careful with these common foot ailments. The major risk to diabetics is that if left untreated, it may develop into something more serious. If you have these, go and seek medical attention. Do not self-medicate or you may make the problem worse. Diabetes: a simple explanation

20 million Americans suffers from diabetes in 2007. By early 2009, 23.6 million people are suffering from diabetes, an 18% increase. Don’t become a diabetes statistic.

According to an article published in 2007, approximately 20 million Americans have diabetes (“Diabetes mellitus.” Altha Roberts Edgren. and Ken R. Wells. The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine. Ed. Jacqueline L. Longe. 3rd ed. Detroit: Gale, Online update, 2007. 5 vols). In another article published in 2009, “Long-term consequences of diabetes” by Chris D. Meletis (see Townsend Letter. May 2009 i310 pg. 54(7)) which I had highlighted in my earlier articles, it was estimated that 23.6 million people in the United States are diabetic.

From 20 million to 23.6 million, that is an 18% increase in people suffering from diabetes over a short 2-years period. And remember, this figure is only from the U.S. alone. What about the numbers worldwide? Aren’t we supposed to start becoming more concern about diabetes?

Why such a huge number? Are not people taking care? One possible assumption that I can draw from this is that people are not educated sufficiently on the dangers of diabetes. Even if they have access to information on diabetes, such information usually is full of jargon that it either prevents people from reading it or understanding it.

To get a basic understanding of what Type 2 diabetes is you need to know how our body function. Our body produces insulin to help regulate blood sugar but because of an imbalance, our body is not able to regulate it. This results in high blood sugar. Though I am oversimplifying this, I feel that we do not need to go too in-depth on the medical mechanics on what causes this imbalance.

The problem with most of us is that we are not able to see what is happening inside our body and because of this, do not realize the danger signs until it is too late. We therefore continued with the usual lifestyle that we lead. However, unknown to us, high blood sugar keeps accumulating in our body. With the build-up of high blood sugar on the blood vessels, blood flow will turn sluggish. Also the blood vessels wall will become smaller and thinner. This will impact on a number of the human organs, such as the heart, kidneys, liver and the eyes, just to highlight a few.

Being diagnosed with diabetes is just the beginning. There will be a lot of challenges ahead. Changes are required with a lot of unsettling moments. Also, habits and lifestyle should be re-examined. However, it is not the end of the world. It is all about adapting to the situation. Over time, it will become a new habit, a new beginning to a new and better you. Diabetes: When you ignore diabetes the result on your feet and legs

Shock for new bride when husband collapsed from Diabetes

Diabetes can lead to leg amputations. Check them daily for wounds and injuries to prevent diabetes from taking your feet and legs away.

Highlighted here are the dangers of diabetes if left untreated and the possible consequences that may result. I know because I had first hand experience of it as I had seen both my parents and three of my aunts and an uncle suffered from diabetes as well as myself. I am not sure about others but even though I knew that I am in the high-risk group, I refused to believe until I was diagnosed as diabetic. I had early warning signs but failed to take precautions to avoid it.

Recently, I came across an article which estimated that 23.6 million people in the United States are diabetic. What is scary is that there are another 5.7 million people out there who are not diagnosed even though they are in the higher risk group of getting diabetes. This is only for the United States but what about other countries? What are the likely consequences that these people are likely to face when their conditions are left untreated?

What are the possible consequences should one ignore their diabetic condition? Firstly, a diabetic has to be aware of what diabetes can do to a person’s legs and feet as it will affect their mobility. If there is any wound or injury on the legs or feet, do not think that it can heal by itself. Even if you self-medicate, my advice is to be careful. It takes a long time for an injury or wound to heal for a diabetic, no matter how small the wound or injury is. I strongly suggest that medical help be sought immediately.

Wounds and injuries on a diabetic takes a longer time to heal. If not properly taken care of, the condition may worsen and the consequence is possible amputation. Take good care of your feet and legs as they are valuable. Don’t live with regret; take care of your feet and legs now.

To care for your feet make sure that you have proper footwear and wear padded socks to protect it further. For the legs, wear pants to protect them. Be properly attired to ensure protection for both your legs and feet.

Another measure is to check the sole of your feet, if possible, every night. Ensure there are no cracked heels as it can lead to small wounds. Use a good cream to repair the cracked heels. Also look out for any signs of wounds. If you are not able to examine it closely, have someone check it for you. Diabetes: what you should know (will save you)

Quite often those who have diabetes do not know it until they have a medical check-up. It is a silent disease as diabetes symptoms are quite difficult to detect in its early stage. It is important to be educated about the dangers of diabetes as this disease is now amongst the top ten killers in the world.

Diabetes: what you should know (will save you) by Tom Y.C.

Diabetes is a silent disease. If it goes undetected, it can become a life threatening disease. People have been known to have their legs amputated due to diabetes. Why is this so? It is simply due to the fact that people are not able to identify the possible diabetic symptoms. Just try asking some people about diabetes and you will be surprised with the answer.

I know because my aunt was one such casualty of diabetes. You see, she was diabetic but did not know about it. Not realizing that she was diabetic, she continued eating whatever she liked. There was no diet because of her ignorance. When she developed a sore in her right leg, not knowing that a diabetic had to take additional care where wounds or injuries are concerned, she ignored it as she thought it would heal itself. After all it was just a small sore. It did not go away, and instead, the sore in her leg became a bigger wound. It was later that she decided to visit a doctor. However, it was too late as the wound developed into gangrene. She had to have her leg amputated. Though this happened in the late 1970's, today in the 21st century, people are still as ignorant of diabetes as in the 1970s.

In most developed countries as well as in the third world countries, access to medical doctors are easier than in the 1970s. So there is no excuse whatsoever to be ignorant about this life-threatening disease. Also, there is always the library that a person can turn to for information on diabetes. If you are still unable to obtain the correct information on diabetes, then turn to the Internet to seek for more information. There are a number of websites on diabetes, ranging from diet to controlling diabetes. There is absolutely no excuse not to be well informed about diabetes.

You may ask why am I so concerned about diabetes? Let's put it this way, ought not we be concerned about a silent killer? There has been a lot of publicity on other diseases such as cancer. But there is not much publicity on diabetes. Yes, I did say that there are a number of ways to obtain information on diabetes, but the publicity to make people more aware of diabetes is sadly insufficient. I believed that there should be more publicity to reach out to a larger crowd of people to educate them on the dangers of diabetes.

Tim's Comments: I hope the above information is of use to you, which is a true story. Feel free to spread it around. You may be helping someone to better manage their diabetes. Have a good day. For more information on diabetes visit Diabetes Tips.

Diabetes: Looking at Type 2 Diabetes

Wedding Day Shock:
Young Bride Horrified As Diabetic Husband Collapse!

Hi,

Most times, people do get confused over diabetes. The most common is either Type 1 or Type 2. I managed to find an article which talks briefly on type 2 diabetes. Here it is:

The second type of diabetes: type 2 diabetes by Groshan Fabiola

There are two important types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The last is more common than the diabetes type 1, which is mostly found in younger persons. The second diabetes type develops mostly in people that are over 40 years old. Because it develops this late in ones life, this kind of diabetes is also known as "adult diabetes". The typical person that suffers from diabetes type 2 is overweight, but there are always exceptions. The symptoms in this type of diabetes are more gradual than in the other kind of diabetes. There is also another big difference between these two diabetes type: the type 2 diabetes is characterized by resistance to insulin, rather than the absence of it in the case of type 1 diabetes. This disease is mostly hereditary in almost all patients. What happens in the case of diabetes type 2 is that the body produces insulin, but the cells do not respond to it. As a result, the patient has a higher glucose level in his/ her blood.

This type 2 of diabetes is the most common one. This also have a bigger tendency of being hereditary than the first. Results have shown that one of three children with a least one parent that has diabetes will develop type 2 diabetes as well. Obesity is also another factor in developing diabetes.

There are many causes for diabetes, which means that are many reasons why a person can develop diabetes type 2. The most common of all the factors that cause diabetes is genetics. Almost a half of the people who suffer from diabetes type 2 are brothers and sisters and one in three children of the same family will eventually suffer from diabetes. The second strongest cause of developing diabetes is obesity. That and an intake of many calories are the second and third of the diabetes causes. Almost a third of all people that suffer from diabetes type 2 have antibodies to the islet cells, which produce insulin. These cells so vital in diabetes can be detected in the blood. If the islet cells do not work properly, your body will not get enough insulin. As a result you will be more than likely to suffer from diabetes. Studies have shown that such people will respond much sooner to oral medication than other people who suffer from diabetes. However, people who are like that and have diabetes will probably need insulin at one moment in their life in order to treat diabetes.

Tim's comments: This article is just a brief write-up on Diabetes Type 2. If you are not sure, my advise is to consult your family doctor. Also, you may wish to view more information on diabetes at Diabetes Tips.

Diabetes: Are you one of those at risk?

Diabetes can strike anyone at anytime. Even young children are not immune to it. There are lots of real life stories about children getting diabetes as well as adults. The following article examines the question whether a person is diabetic or not.

Are you a diabetic. by www.online-reviewers.com

The following article on diabetes is appropriate for all, no matter what age. Diabetes is a serious disease. But the startling truth is that diabetes is reversible. Diabetes is the number one cause of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This disease is a condition where the body is unable to automatically regulate blood glucose levels, resulting in too much glucose (a sugar) in the blood. Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects as many as 16 million Americans.

Diabetes is divided into two major groups. Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common childhood diseases. Type 1 Diabetes is called Juvenile Diabetes as the onset of it begins in childhood. Type 2 diabetes is most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90% of cases. They concluded that most cases of type 2 diabetes is preventable by choosing a healthier lifestyle. The problem, in a nutshell, is that type 2 diabetes is not a simple disease caused by a single gene. The best way to control type 2 diabetes is with diet and exercise. There has been a great deal of buzz about stem cell research and diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes is more common than Type 1 Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a life-long disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. Conditions associated with type 2 diabetes include hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Type 2 diabetes may account for about 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Up to two-thirds of people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms. Obesity is the single most important risk factor for type 2 diabetes. An estimated 20% of all cases of new onset type 2 diabetes are in individuals between the ages of 9-19. The more you know about type 2 diabetes, the more you'll be able to take the right steps to take control of your condition.

What is the relationship between insulin resistance and diabetes. Insulin resistance can occur long before the onset of type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is an important marker of diabetes risk. You can counter insulin resistance through modest weight loss and exercise. It is now generally accepted that insulin resistance and ß-cell dysfunction are major factors involved in the development of diabetes. Some scientists think a defect in specific genes may cause insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is a serious disease. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, renal failure, and amputation in the United States. Diabetes is divided into two major groups. Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common childhood diseases. Type 2 diabetes is most common form of diabetes, accounting for 90% of cases. Diabetes is a growing global problem of devastating social and economic impact. But the startling truth is that diabetes is reversible. The first step in managing diabetes is to commit yourself to the care of a health professional.

Diabetes: Type of diabetes

Hi,

Let us begin with an article that talks about the basics of diabetes, that is, the types of diabetes that will affect us as human beings. This is the first article that I found and which I feel is quite informative for beginners.

What Are 3 Common Types Of Diabetes Mellitus by Dr. Armughan Riaz

what are types of Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes is classified into 3 types. 1-Type 1 Diabetes 2-Type 2 Diabetes 3-Gestational Diabetes

Here we will discuss one by one all three types of diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is also called Juvenile Diabetes, Insulin dependent diabetes or Autoimmune Diabetes. Person with type 1 diabetes has immune response against his own beta cells of pancreas, so pancreas is unable to produce insulin at-all. That is why it is called as autoimmune diabetes. Juvenile diabetes usually occurs in children but can appear at any age. To live normal life patient has to take insulin and take regular exercise and has proper diet plan. The main cause of this type 1 diabetes are environmental factors like virus, diet or chemicals in people genetically predisposed. In USA 10-15% diagnosed cases of diabetes mellitus comprises of type 1 diabetes. Symptoms of type 1 diabetes are increase urination, increase thirst, increase hunger and weight loss. Eyes may also be affected as blurred vision. The person with type 1 diabetes should be diagnosed earlier, otherwise it can lead to a medical emergency situation like diabetic Coma with kitoacidosis.

Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 Diabetes is also called as Non Insulin dependent diabetes Mellitus or Adult-onset diabetes. This is most common type of diabetes affecting nearly 80% of all cases of diabetes. It is usually seen in adults. There are two mechanisms of type 2 diabetes. Either there is deficiency of insulin, or there is increase resistance of insulin. Insulin resistance means that body is unable to use available insulin. The main cause of this type of diabetes is genetic however other factors like overweight, obesity, high blood pressure, lack of exercise, overeating habits may also affect. About 80% of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes in-contrast to type 1 develop very slowly. There may be fatigue, weight loss, increase urination, blurred vision or delay wound healing.T his type of diabetes is treated with exercise, diet control, tablets. However later, you may need insulin injections as well.

Gestational Diabetes: Some women who develop diabetes during later stages of pregnancy is called as Gestational diabetes. Though their glucose levels returns to normal but even then they have greater chances of developing diabetes mellitus within next 5 to 10 years. Women with gestational diabetes may have no symptoms at all. The cause of gestational diabetes is hormonal imbalance during pregnancy or insufficient Insulin. Child of women who develops gestational diabetes is also at high risk of developing diabetes in later life. Maintaining normal body weight and being physically active may help prevent development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in a patient of gestational diabetes.

Diabetes: just a word

Hi, most likely you would have heard of diabetes. Yes it is a disease. Like all diseases, it will result in complications if it is not well managed.

Why am I talking about diabetes? Simply for the fact that I was diagnosed with it in 2008 July. After one year of living with diabetes, and trying to find out as much as possible about the disease, I realized that information on diabetes does not really cater to those who are newly diagnosed with diabetes. Also, almost everyone have heard of this disease but their knowledge of diabetes is not good enough to help those who are suffering from diabetes. Same goes for those who are diagnosed with this disease.

Lots of information on diabetes can be found on the internet. From my experience, these information are either not suitable for the layperson because of the clinical terms used while some of the information are nothing more than just bits and pieces without much evidence to back it up.

The purpose for starting this blog is to provide a one-stop shop for credible diabetes information as well as providing the links to those products that will help a diabetic person to better manage his or her condition. Gaining the necessary knowledge is just the first step to managing diabetes. So learn more about diabetes to be better informed.

Aim at the layperson, the information found here can be used by those suffering from diabetes as well as those who wants to help their diabetic relations and friends to become better informed in order to manage diabetes. I shall be posting more articles that I come across as well as useful tips that I used myself to better manage diabetes. So be on the lookout for these articles as I scour the internet for you.

Not only will I post articles / contents of diabetes that I have come across, I shall also highlight those products that will help in the management of diabetes. Especially for those newly diagnosed with diabetes, my suggestion is to lookout for supplements that will help you to better control your diabetes. Of course, do not stop taking your diabetic medication. The supplement will aid in better management of the disease. I know because I do take a few supplements, and it really does help a lot. You will be surprised as I continue to write more in my blog about diabetes as I will show you some evidence how taking supplement had helped me in my diabetes management.

To better diabetes management.

A word from Tim:
Well you have just read my introduction. As you may well be aware of, there are many information on diabetes on the internet. However, if you wish to find out more on diabetes then take a look at this website on Diabetes Tips.
